The Man In The Water
Written by: James Krolik
I am standing at the edge of the water.
Staring into the aquatic mirror, I smile.
The man in the water is someone who I’ve cherished and watched him grow from the beginning.
His reflection resurfaces repressed feelings of memories that have been the victim of time.
I must remember, he is not flawless.
Watching him grow has been a storm on the horizon.
Anxiety encompasses those he has come near.
Not knowing where he may go next, keeping people guessing, following his own will, he travels.
But always having a peaceful following, for he has accomplished his goal; he has left lasting impressions wherever he has been.
Perpetually surrounding his every surface:
His skin is not impregnable.
His mind is malleable.
His shroud is worn.
For this is the way of the world,
Forever changing,
Forever adapting.
Yet, as I reminisce on my experiences with the man in the water, I become flushed with feelings.
I shed a tear.
I stand and wait as it falls to the water.
The ripples distort my view.
It is then I realize my catalyst.
It is then I see the truth.
It is then, I know, I am that man.
And as my reflection travels in the current,
so will my impression.
As the ripples traverse the aquatic glass, they will ultimately touch something, someone.
Inevitably traveling to their final destination, they will move.
Analogically the ripples are my goal in life.
In this pool of life, I, too, want my ripples to reach their destination.
The impression the one drop left along the way fades, but it still exists.
It exists in the memories of those who were witness to them; those who received them.
And such, much like nature forever changing the land, the recipients are forever changed, even in the most miniscule way.
And even the obstructions that have blocked the way have received something, and thus, are forever changed.
I am now sitting by the edge of the water.
Staring, still, into the aquatic mirror, I smile.
Though not for my thoughts on the man,
but for the ripples I can see, slowly heading my way.
